PS4 To Be Announced In May? | Playstation 4 Updates

PS4 To Be Announced In May? | Playstation 4 Updates

Hi everyone!

So while everyone has been speculating on when exactly the new Playstation 4 will be announced  our best clue yet may have been dropped by Sony’s VP himself!

It is being reported that Hiroshi Sakamoto has mentioned that we may be seeing a PS4 announcement as early as May of this year. The funny thing is that this almost corresponds with E3 2013 that is scheduled for June. So as most of us are waiting to see the Xbox 720 announced at E3 2013, wouldn’t it make sense for Sony to wait until E3? Or perhaps they want to have a bit of a head start on the media blitz that will surely be in full force ahead of these announcements.

Most of us have been saying since day 1 that it would not be in Sony’s best interest to wait until  2014 to announce this long awaited console, as this would put them almost a full year behind Microsoft and their announcement of the new Xbox. So to me, a mid 2013 announcement makes sense.

The other big rumour is the idea that the Playstation Orbis could contain Near Field Communication (NFC) capabilities. This is a great feature addition and there are so many possibilities. Many believe that most peripherals will make use of the long awaited NFC technology. Things like controllers, remotes, headsets and even smartphones could make use of NFC.

PS4 To Be Debuted In February At Destination Playstation? | Playstation 4 Updates

PS4 To Be Debuted In February At Destination Playstation? | Playstation 4 Updates

Hey everyone!

As with the pending release of any major gaming console, the rumour mill is not taking any time off when it comes to the announcement of the new Playstation 4. Over the last few months we have seen a countless flurry of so called ‘insider reports’ and ‘privileged information’. The question is, are any of these to be believed?

The most recent PS4 announcement rumour comes on the heels of Sony’s announcement that Destination Playstation, a private conference held by Sony, will be taking place on February 25th in Arizona.

We recently reported that there was possibly a delay with the PS4 due to some complications with certain hardware components. Read all about it here.

PS4 Announcement

So is it possible that we will see a PS4 announcement at Destination Playstation? It’s possible. However, I must say that I don’t know if it is the ideal place. I say this because this particular event is a closed event. This means that members of the media or the general public are not able to attend. So any announcements made here, will be done it private. Sony would then have to publicize a recording of the event, or simply release a (disappointing) press release regarding the Playstation Orbis features. It seems like if they were going to announce the next big thing, they would do so at an event that the public could attend. This will allow more of their fans to spread the word and get some free marketing. To me, a private event would be disappointing.

So what do you guys think? Will we hear all about the new Playstation at Destination Playstation? Or will we have to wait a bit longer? Let us know what you think in the comment field below!

Sony PS4 Could Be Delayed Until Mid 2014 | Playstation 4 Updates

Sony PS4 Could Be Delayed Until Mid 2014 | Playstation 4 Updates

Hey Guys!

This will be out last post of 2012! So that being said, Happy New Year! I hope 2013 is a great year for all of us! But the question is, will 2013 be the year for the new Playstation 4 (Orbis)?

Last week we talked about some of the purported PS4 specs that we were expecting. This included things like a dual GPU & APU chip.  Read about that HERE.

Today I’m afraid that I may have some bad news. Some new reports that have been circulating the web indicate that due to the delay of some key hardware components. Prior to this we were expecting a PS4 launch around mid 2013, or at least in time for the 2013 holiday season. This delay in production means that we may not be seeing an Orbis hit the market until at least 2014, thus missing the 2013 holiday shopping season. This could be a huge hit to Sony, especially if Microsoft ends up releasing the XBOX 720 in 2013. They would have a huge head start in sales.

The below diagrams show a visual representation of what is holding up production of the PS4…

Here is the OLD timeline of hardware production:

Sony PS4 Delay

And here is the NEW timeline of hardware production:

Playstation 4 Delay

These charts come from the company Amkor, who are responsible for producing the main AMD chips for the Playstation 4. This delay in the production of the Si Interposer + DDR + Logic component may be fact or may be rumour, but in either case, a 2013 release at this point is not looking too likely according to multiple different sources.

So what do you guys think? Will we be seeing a Sony PS4 in 2013? Drop us a comment in the comment box below and let us know!

Happy New Year!!!

Playstation 4 Specs: GPU Could Feature Dual APU & GPU | Playstation 4 Updates

Playstation 4 Specs: GPU Could Feature Dual APU & GPU | Playstation 4 Updates

Hi Everyone!

If you have been trotting the Internet recently for our latest PS4 updates then most likely you have read the recent reports that a source ‘in the know’ has reported some interesting new rumours. This rumour would have us believe that the new Playstation Orbis may have an upgraded GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). When it comes to video games, the GPU is one of the most important specifications to worry about. Basically, this is the computer chip that generates all of the graphics, transitions & other graphic intensive operations. This particular report states that the PS4 will contain both an upgraded GPU AND what is known as an APU.

An APU is an ‘Accelerated Processing Unit‘. This APU will essentially add some extra horsepower to the already upgraded GPU. If this turns out to be true, then it is very possible that the Playstation 4 could support resolutions up to 4096×2160. This would be a huge upgrade from the current Playstation 3.

Also, this sort of spec boost could mean the the Orbis could be able to display 3D games in full high definition. This would be a great differentiator from some of the competition and may give the Playstation 4 the edge when it finally comes to market.

Playstation 4 Specs

As always, all of these reports are just rumours and there has not yet been an official statement from Sony on any of the official specs that will show up on the PS4.

PS4 To Run At 30 FPS? | Playstation 4 Updates

PS4 To Run At 30 FPS? | Playstation 4 Updates

Last week when we announced our new forum we had a lot of people writing in about adding a rumours section. And we have done just that. Check out our PS4 forum announcement here. And why do people want to hear about the rumours? Because there have been a lot of rumours showing up on line recently regarding the new PS4. AKA Playstation Orbis. But here’s one that I am sure a lot of gamers are not happy to hear.

A number of sources have come out saying that the new Playstation (and maybe even the new Xbox 720) will be running at a frame rate of only 30 FPS. Why does this matter?

Well look at it this way. Most high end PC games are running at a frame rate of right around 60 FPS. (The higher the frame rate, the better the graphics look…kind of)

I don’t think it’s too crazy to expect that in 2013 (or 2014 when the PS4 finally launches) to bring our next generation consoles up to par with machines that are a few years old. And why not? If the many PS4 rumours are to be believed, the next gen console will have 8GB of RAM, Intel CPU’s and even NVIDIA graphic cards. Are you telling me that these high end specs don’t support 60 FPS? I’m sure they do, so what is the real reason that we are stuck at 30?

It could be the TV on which you are playing these games. While many of us take for granted our expensive, big screen HD televisions for our video games, but not everyone’s TV is as good as yours! For those which an older tube TV (For example) I can see issues when trying to play video games at 60 FPS. I’m sure that the quality that the current gen PS3 is putting out right now is enough to deal with.

PS4 Updates

Does it have to do with the video game developers? Perhaps there are logistic reason for the big video game studios not to want to code their games at this resolution?

Who knows?

All I know if that I was somewhat disappointed when I heard this rumour as I’m sure many of you were too. But keep in mind it is just that…a rumour. It is quite possible that this is not the case and the new Playstation Orbis will be better than we could have ever expected!!!

(I said possible…not likely!)

Until later guys…

PS4 Release Date | Playstation 4 Updates

PS4 Release Date | Playstation 4 Updates

Hey everyone!

Last week we discussed the idea that the Internet needs a central hub to aggregate all of the PS4 news and updates. You can read our first post here.

Since then, I have been getting a lot of question recently about the Playstation 4 (AKA Playstation v) release date. There have been a huge amount of rumours flying around the Internet recently so it is hard to know who to believe. While I do not claim to have all the answers, I can do my best to aggregate the majority of these rumours into a concise synopsis.

So Sony has confirmed that we will probably not see the PS4 at E3 in 2013. They maintain their original idea the the PS3 was good enough for a 10 year life span, and they do not plan to abandon this idea just yet.

Here’s the exact quote from Kaz Hirai:

Andy (House) is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3. I’ve always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that. – Kaz HiraiCEO Sony Computer Entertainment

So the question is, do we believe him? And do you believe that the Playstation 3 can survive until 2016? The PS3, being unveiled in 2006 was at the time one of the top two gaming system in the world, along with Microsoft’s XBOX360.

PS4 Release Date

There have been many rumours flying around the the next generation XBOX will be debuting this year at E3; so if this is in fact the case, can Sony afford to wait another 2-3 years before coming out with their competitor? Perhaps the anticipation of the new console will help drive sales when it finally does launch? (Taking a page out of Apple’s marketing playbook) Or will the pending release of a new Playstation be too little too late?

Right now, we just don’t know. And while gamers around the world are chomping at the bit to get their hands on the new Playstation 4, it does not look likely in the next year or so. Perhaps before Christmas 2013? How about 2014?

The truth is that we just don’t know. We will be covering E3 2013 in hands on detail in June, so perhaps we will be able to get some details then?

Hulu Plus Free Trial

And what then about the specs? Some of the more popular rumours around are an increase in RAM, with a slimmer form factor. And how about that 4K resolution we’ve been hearing all about? Well, that is one rumour that will probably go unfulfilled. There are way too many technical and monetary reasons that 4K resolution on the Playstation 4 would make no sense. I mean, the fact that a decent TV with that kind of display is worth more than your car is a big one. But think about it, even though PS3 can output up to 1080p, how many games actually use it? So why increase the max output on resolution if developers do not even use what they have now? I think that this one is a ways away. Probably not until 4K TV’s are cheaper and easily accesible to the average gamer.

Leave us a comment below to let us know what you’re looking forward to the most from E3 this year! Is it a ‘possible’ PS Orbis announcement?  How about the XBOX 720?  A particular game? Let us know in the comment box below!

Until next time…
